CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) — An off-duty Philadelphia firefighter has died after participating in the Escape The Cape Triathlon in Cape May.

Jim Salmon, public information officer with the Delaware River & Bay Authority, tells the Press of Atlantic City that a participant in Sunday’s race became in need of medical attention during the Olympic swim portion.

The man was unresponsive in the water. Salmon says the man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about 10:20 a.m.

It’s unclear how he died. A spokesperson for the fire department tells the newspaper that details will be released according to the family’s wishes.

CBS3 Philly reports that another off-duty Philadelphia firefighter died Sunday from long-term medical issues.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel tweeted that the department is mourning the untimely loss of two firefighters.

I'm surprised more of these folks aren't dying. Elite athletes keep pushing the envelope more, and more.
