Old Franklin Township playground to be replaced with modern park

An over three-decades old playground structure in Franklin Township is scheduled to receive a face-lift.

In an effort to expand its role in the community, the Franklin Township Community Parks Committee, along with the Franklin Township Advisory and Recreation Board, plan to create the Phifer Ice Dam Community Park, beginning with new playground equipment.

The budget to develop the park is $150,000, according to Joseph P. Connaughton, chairperson, Parks & Recreation Committee.

All donations are tax deductible under Franklin Township Athletic Association 501(c)(3). Financial institution donations can also be used toward community reinvestment endeavors.

The existing playground structure — which is 35 years old and in disrepair — will be replaced with a modern state-of-the-art system that is totally compliant with all national requirements, Connaughton said.

It will include two main structures, one for ages 2-5, and one for ages 5-12. The community park will also include an exercise trail complete with exercise stations for adults of all ages to promote health and fitness.

Phifer Ice Dam Community Park will service Franklin Township, Lehighton, and surrounding areas.

“We ask that you make a commitment to support our community park,” Connaughton said. “We hope you will consider a donation helping to improve the community in which we live and work.”

Names and logos of all sponsors will be advertised under levels of sponsorships.

In the event a sponsor would fund the entire project, the sponsor’s name would be prominently displayed.

Sponsorship levels include Friend Sponsor (Up to $500); Copper Sponsor ($1,000); Bronze Sponsor ($5,000); Silver Sponsor ($10,000); Gold Sponsor ($25,000) Platinum Elite Sponsor ($50,000); and Diamond Exclusive Sponsor ($100,000).

The Franklin Township Athletic Association was founded in 1986 to promote a baseball program for area children ages 3-19.
