Man charged with choking wife during argument
A Kunkletown man has been charged with choking his wife during an argument.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper Justin Swartz of the Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton Barracks:
At 8:35 p.m. Monday, state police at Lehighton received a domestic call from a woman for reports of an inactive domestic she was involved in with her husband in the 100 block of Butternut Street, Eldred Township.
Police arrived on scene and met with the woman and her mother.
The woman said she and her husband, Steven Christian, 47, were arguing about marital issues when Christian put his arm around her neck and put her in a choke hold and locked his hands.
The woman said while Christian was choking her, he told her he would kill her and said she could not breathe or yell for help at that time.
The woman said Christian loosened his grip enough for her to yell for help. His mother-in-law came into the room as the woman was falling to the floor.
Christian said he would hurt his mother-in-law as they were attempting to dial 911.
Police spoke with Christian at the scene, who said he was arguing with his wife about something, but couldn’t remember exactly what started the argument.
Christian said he got tired of listening to his wife, so he grabbed her by the neck, released her and went to his bedroom.
Christian faces charges of strangulation, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment.
He is currently incarcerated in the Monroe County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail, and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing Aug. 2 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.
