NEW YORK — Wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein was found injured on the floor of his cell early this week in the federal jail where he is awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, a person familiar with the episode told The Associated Press on Thursday.

It wasn’t clear whether bruising on the 66-year-old’s neck was self-inflicted or from an assault, said the person, who wasn’t authorized to discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Epstein was treated and remains in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City.

There was no immediate response from jail officials and one of Epstein’s lawyers.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center, where Epstein is being held, is famous for stringent security and high-profile prisoners, which have included terrorists, Wall Street schemers and, until recently, the Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Epstein has been accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s. He has pleaded not guilty.

A judge denied bail to Epstein after a hearing last week, ruling that he might flee the country if he was released. The judge also said Epstein posed a danger to the public because of his “uncontrollable” urges to engage in sexual conduct with underage girls.

Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution in a deal that ended a federal investigation involving many teenage girls who said they had been sexually abused.

He was sentenced to 13 months in jail but was allowed to leave the county stockade on most days and spend the day in his private office. After his release, he registered as a sex offender.

Federal prosecutors in New York reopened the probe after investigative reports in the Miami Herald sparked outrage over the original plea bargain.

Epstein was indicted on new federal charges this month. Epstein’s lawyers say he hasn’t had any illicit contact with underage girls since serving his jail sentence in Florida. They also say the current charges are improper because the federal government is reneging on the deal not to prosecute him.

U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned after coming under renewed criticism for overseeing that deal when he was U.S. attorney in Miami.

What direct evidence do you have that Trump has any involvement in any of this? This is blasphemy. How would you react if accusations were raised upon you? All you want is to subvert & destroy Trump because you hate him. You should learn a lesson from the Mueller Report & Testimonial. Do onto others as you would like done upon yourself, Joe. Is this just another example of liberal “ends justify the means” politics? Keep in mind that payback is a b*tch.
This is not direct evidence. This is heresy. This is just conjecture created by tainted sources that hate President Trump. How would you like to have fake accusations like this made against you? You even refuse to accept credible sources that are documented properly. You readily dismiss them as “Trump sycophants.” Yet you accept these shaky accusations just as readily. This is indicative of your extreme bias, Joe. You are a hostage to Trump Derangement Syndrome. Just because you hate President Trump doesn’t mean that everyone else does. A lesson should be learned about the failed Mueller Testimony. Liberals tried to make something out of nothing. That was an epic failure. You watched with glee as an innocent man was led to the political gallows, only to be disappointed by a last minute reprieve when a fraudulent investigation evaporated before your bloodthirsty eyes. Now, you move on to the next chance, out of desperation, to try once again to satiate a fake sense of bloodlust.
Joe, you state, “perhaps the woman...was not telling the truth...” Are you kidding? You wouldn’t be so dismissive if it were you being accused, right? Maybe Trump decided not to file a counter suit for a reason you are not aware of. I think you hate Trump so much that you wish he did it. You show extreme bias. You would not be allowed on a jury sitting in judgement of Trump, or, any Republican. I bet you overcharge any Republican at your business. They deserve to pay more, since they were so stupid to vote for Trump. I bet you can’t wait until Nadler gets his crummy hands on Trumps tax returns, right? Trump deserves to get taken down because you don’t like him, right? Perhaps, we can redo the Kavanaugh debacle again, only Trump would be forced to defend himself against fake charges this time, perfect, right? The ends justify the means, right? Cheating speaks volumes about bias.
T2C thanks for the humor it made my morning. Again, I can put off watching 2 1/2 Men, (the old reruns not the ones with Walden!), or Bill Maher, or Seth Meyers for a while, until I need some well written humor.
