Driver crashes, dies, after fleeing police

Published December 25. 2018 09:35AM

A man was killed on Christmas Eve when he fled from a traffic stop and crashed in Towamensing Township.

State police at Lehighton said they tried to initiate a traffic stop at 5:53 p.m. Monday at Route 209 and Anderson Drive in Towamensing Township.

Police said the driver of a Nissan coupe, who was not identified, fled and drove a mile at a high rate of speed when he lost control and ran off the road, hitting trees. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner Bob Miller said this morning that the man was not carrying any identification. An autopsy will be performed Wednesday to confirm his identity.

The state police were assisted by Don’s Towing, Palmerton EMS, Lehighton EMS and Trachsville and Franklin fire companies.

Where will this man spend eternity now? Only he and God knows. His plan was probably to open a few Christmas Gifts today. How about you? Where will you spend eternity if today were to be your last? We celebrate the birth of Christ.

Hark! the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King... Born that man no more may die...

Of coarse this speaks of those who accept and invite this one named Christ (Jesus) into their life. I did, have you? Don't delay folks, it's an eternal decision.
Merry Christmas
Why didn't you just consider the question and let it be? Don't you believe there is a heaven? Do you actually think Jesus is fictional? Would they base our calendar on fiction? Come on now, you know better than that.
Merry Christmas, and God's Blessings be on you.
What do u mean fiction? In other words another liberal idiot who doesn’t believe in God. This country was founded on Christian conservative beliefs & after years we let all u idiots into our country & u try to destroy American. Thank God for Trump. He’d go down as one of the greatest presidents ever if it wasn’t for the bias main stream liberal media & people like the u & the comment before yours.
Christian conservative beliefs? Wrong. many of the framers of the Constitution were Deists, Quakers, and Unitarians who had rejected the old Puritan beliefs that favored a theocracy. Even later evangelical Christians of the 19th century supported abolition, women’s rights, prison reform and immigration. No resemblance to the “conservative” Christian beliefs of today, which are mean-spirited and repressive, and administered by a cruel, morally corrupt president.
Once again, the Times News fails to follow up and provide the identity of the driver. This happens time and time again with accidents. Just because the police don’t provide the information doesn't mean you shouldn’t dig it up and print it. Whatever happened to investigative journalism? Joe Boyle would be turning in his grave.
On your last point I totally agree. I can’t believe the police anymore are afraid to put peoples name in the paper. Although at this writing I seen they now put it in as they should. Agree also with Krystal Method totally uncalled for these high speed chases that put innocent peoples lives at risk. On your second point about Trump your full of crap. To many illegals putting a strain on our economy. Liberal socialists want to just keep giving free stuff to people who don’t want to work. Hard working people like me have to pay for all these social programs. I’m in the 30% tax bracket how much more do u expect me to pay???? Socialism doesn’t work look at Venezuela. Again Trump is making America Great Again!!!!!!
Thank you for your comments, but I must disagree on the second point. I think the real freeloaders are the wealthy executives and politicians getting "corporate welfare" as they earn astronomical salaries while paying relatively little taxes. The immigrants I know, both documented and undocumented, work their asses off at low wages to support their families, just as our own European grandparents did. Even Donald Trump hired undocumented workers for his real-estate projects and stiffed them on their wages. Immigrants and American workers should understand they have common interests. Instead Mr Trump pits them against each other while he goes to the bank. What have you observed about immigrant workers in your community? Have you ever talked to them about their experiences and feelings?
I think the papers should list the cause of death in the Obituaries. Everybody talking about the drug related deaths...well lets see it. None of this Mr. Abrupt, 23 years old, passed away unexpectedly at home from a short illness. I want to see Mr. Abrupt, 23, loved his family and kids. Enjoyed hunting, fishing, and donating time at all the local orphanages. He loved school, and telling jokes, and painting pictures. Sadly, he loved drugs, especially "insert favorite drug(s)" which he loved so much he overdosed, and now he's dead.

I know, it's not the papers' duty to print cause of death. I know not everyone that dies gets an Obituary written.
I'll throw my .02 worth on this. I live near the accident site. I knew Tyler and his parents to see them. I probably know the Trooper. I don't think the article is accurate. The skid marks on 209 appear to be headed North and are located BEFORE Anderson Drive. I heard Tyler took off from one of the Gas Stations along 209. There are two just within a mile of Anderson Dr. If it started there it was hardly a chase. I'd bet the Trooper barely had the lights and siren on before it was over. Like I said a mile - that would hardly constitute a chase.

Ohh and by the way the direction of the chase would put it exactly right past the PSP Barracks. Even if you have a car that's faster than a police cruiser it's not faster than the radio.

It's sad for everyone. I wouldn't doubt the Trooper and Tyler would recognize each other. We all frequent the gas stations along 209 and recognize each other. Would the Trooper recognize the car - maybe - maybe not. In my mind there has to be more to this story, but it doesn't matter. Just don't run.

Tyler and the guy in the van that was shot and killed were MEN. They made their own decisions. Please stop looking to blame someone else or look for excuses. At least respect them enough to hold them accountable for their actions. I'm glad no-one else was hurt. I don't blame the police for any of it. Would it seem logical a person would run from nothing more than a traffic ticket or some other minor violation - NO. So you give chase. And it's my opinion that's the way it should be.

I have a young driver and we discussed this. When you see the lights pull over. You know what you did - stop making it someone else's problem - TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. I don't know what else to tell a young man or woman.
