Behavior should not be allowed

Published November 06. 2019 01:16PM

So, I sit here reading the front page of today’s paper about Lehighton’s homecoming dance and how students feel their rights are being taken away, and about the music. Well let me say, as a parent of a 15-year-old freshman, I found it horrible and sick to my stomach when she came home along with friends and they told me how there was a big circle on the dance floor and students were all grinding up on each other! And vulgar words from the music were NOT bleeped out.

Boys and girls making out in front of all the students. I mean really! I was so mad I could have spit fire! Adults don’t even act like that at a party. Barrooms that hire DJs bleep out the vulgar gestures. But kids in high school think it’s OK because they’re more mature? OK! I think not. This is exactly why kids are the way they are today! Years ago schools never would have allowed such behavior. I’m very embarrassed Lehighton school let this happen. There are kids out there that have morals!

Nikki,
Years ago teachers would have been appalled by crude rude behavior. These days, some teachers participate in such, and receive praise. Not all... some.
Relativity, no more absolutes, teachers?
Joe,
Having seven grown children, I have plenty to cite, I'm just not feeling compelled to prove anything to you anymore. There're are teachers out there who know what I speak of.
Nikki,

Kids today are confronted with much worse issues than grinding and bad words. I graduating in the 80's and there was plenty of making out in public and even bad words at dances. Nothing new here.
so... all's well Joe? Let's not take action? If the majority accepts, so be it? What are you saying Joe? Let's just let them to the reprobate mind? Everything's cool?
You make mock of Puritans? The Puritans have a very significant place in the history of America. In fact, the American Tree of Life grew out of the established Plymouth Rock. Curious how accurate this is being taught in the government schools these days.

Happy Day of Thanksgiving to all, from a "Puritan" in Spirit.
Sorry, but the term Puritan has been used as an adjective for decades, if not centuries. Again, you are so concrete in thinking its almost charming. See link.

Nikki, I tend to think others feel your anger and frustration too. Seems like your 15 yr. old was concerned, by sharing the information with you. We can't control other peoples behavior, only our own behavior. You seem to be setting the guidelines, and standards you want with your kids and that's all that matters. Keep the faith.
Nikki, I agree with much of what you have said. I would never have behaved that way at a school function. The sad thing is that many kids today do not have the same role models we had back then. Many parents are children themselves when they become parents. We've been told that the inappropriate behavior was stopped by the chaperones. If this is not the case, it should be reported to the administration and dealt with according to policy. Children make many mistakes and they need to learn from them. Hopefully the consequesnces of those mistakes will not be devastating.

This is yet another instance of someone putting out incorrect info. The teen pregnancy rates in the 60's and 70's were almost double what they are today...in fact teen pregnancy is at its all time low right now. Furthermore, in the early 70's the average age that a woman was when having her first child was 21. Today it is 31. So your contention that these kids today are being raised by kids, or engaging in more immoral behavior than when you were a kid is just false.

Barb, Joe, and all,
Teen pregnancy has dropped, because our government educators have embraced the ways of Planned Parenthood. Tech the children about condoms, and convince them that abortion (murder) is just fine... it's the new norm. Just consider if you will, the impact the act of aborting a baby has had on woman's mental well being. Just a thought.
Bump, grind, and have sex any way you wish... it's a new America! Like what you see?
Students struggling with mental health issues have increased, it is crucial that teachers—the adults with whom students spend most of their day—are able to utilize methods to effectively identify and/or address the mental health needs of their students. But first, the teacher needs to be on solid ground. The Master needs to be absolute in truth and measure... are they?
Liking what you see folks? Is this truly what we want?
Wrong wrong wrong wrong. Teens today are having far less sex and the reported age of first sexual contact is trending up. Abortion rates are dropping. Every study shows this so I would be curious to find out where you have gotten the info that teenagers are all having tons of abortions.

Maybe planned parenthood is working?

Joe, I think the point we are making is about behavior in public and certainly how times have changed. The words she used "children themselves" I perceive as immature behavior, not an age.
But I dispute this notion put forward that somehow kids today misbehave more than in the past..it’s garbage. The data I gave suggests there was a ton more promiscuity when Barb was a kid. And yes there was plenty of cursing too.
People have not changed? OK I'll let that alone.
The way we do education has changed. It is no longer being controlled locally.
Federal regulation, federal funding, promises of free college, increase in cost and a general dumbing down of the curriculum in order that tests can be passed has destroyed what’s left of quality education.
Add to that, disfunctional families, and America is in trouble.
But hey, let the kids to their own devices, keep pumping $$$ in to it... it's all just fine.
One big "F-ing" mess. I learned that from a teacher.
Yes, there was far more promiscuity back then. But not all participated. I did not. Many of my friends did not. In many ways, we were raised differently. I was taught to respect myself. We also were not bombarded with sex on TV all the time growing up. Things have changed, some for the better some for the worse.
Please. When Barb and I were teenagers you could drink at 18! Or at least drive across to NJ and buy your liquor.

We partied plenty, ran from police busting the parties, etc etc.
I lived in NJ and could drink at 18. Didn't do much of that though. Didn't party hearty either. Never had to run from the cops at a party either. So speak for yourself on those points.
Not to mention that crime rates among children have been dropping yearly since the 80's and 90's.

While crime rates may have dropped, it depends on the crime IMO. I never heard of someone going into a school and shooting and killing their classmates and teachers when I was in school. And this is NOT a comment on guns. We have far more issues with drug addiction and mental health today. We have had a break down of the family structure. Far more divorce, both parents working, more kids being raised in financially stressed homes and a whole host of other problems that lead to these outcomes. I know of many people that were raised dirt poor but they were raised to respect other people and their property, to value the lives of all people. They were raised to be accountable for their actions. Not everyone of course, but certainly most. This is a societal breakdown and it is rampant not just in the schools. We've been told the chaperones stopped the behavior, and as I was not present I can't speak to that. I would certainly hope it was stopped. But the mother who penned this letter certainly has a right to be appalled at the fact it occurred to begin with.
I personally do not believe in abortion. For me. Not that it would be an issue for me at my age anymore. But I also do not believe I have the right to tell someone else what to do if faced with that situation. I've known those who have used abortion as a form of birth control and have paid the price both mentally, emotionally and physically. It is the law that it is legal. Do I want to go back to the days of backstreet abortions? Absolutely not! Do I believe that a child is a human being from the moment of conception? Absolutely I do! But each woman must decide this for themselves. I know what happens to the baby during abortion and it is horrific in my opinion, but that is my opinion and I've no right to force it on others or to judge them for their decision. That is their own choice and they, not I must live with it.
Barb,
I appreciate the way you personalized the point. As for me...
I also like that your view isn't one of a sexist nature.
These things must be discussed in civility, after all, the nation is at stake. As one who embraces science, I constantly go to sustainability and birth rate when discussing abortion. From the moral side, I look at society, and our ability to respect others, even throwing of selfish ambitions to help maintain civility for all.
The sexual prime for the human animal is adolescence, to ignore this or chose to downplay this is the refusal of millions of years of biological evolution, which has the final say.
Don’t be surprised when teens are sexually inclined, it’s in our inborn nature.
If anybody deserves blame it’s the adults overseeing the events...
Tony tony tony...did you not see that these kids were rubbing up on each other while dancing? And bad words in songs?!?! This type of perversion is right out of sodom and Gomorrah.
